#45 - Rusty

#45
Artist: Rodan
Album: Rusty
Year of Release: 1994
Label: Quarterstick

I have no one single source of finding music.  Rather I come across it almost at random.  The most egregious example of this was finding one of the albums in the top ten of this list through a YouTube recommendation.  This one is a close runner up though, as I unfortunately found it through an obituary.  Luckily his soul lives on through the works he left behind (you'll see him again on this list).

Rusty fits right in the middle of the hardcore/math rock/post rock sound perfected in 1990s Louisville.  The albums' key track "The Everyday World of Bodies" has all the trademarks of the scene: off-kilter rhythms, spoken word, and unabashedly cathartic releases.  Other tracks like "Bible Silver Corner" show how the same basic tools could be used to create something completely different (a virtual lullaby) while maintaining the same aura of unease.  On the whole it's rough around the edges but it's such a perfect nugget of its time and place that I don't care.
