The Right Survives By Promoting Ignorance

Saw people dunking on the tweet below a few weeks back.  The refrain was that Hochman was stupid, which might be true (further evidence here).  But I think obfuscating reality and twisting the words of true radicals is actually the primary role of conservative intellectuals.  So even if Hochman himself appears to be a dim bulb, he's filling this role with aplomb, arguing that it's not the rich who wield true power in our society, but instead the trans people who are on your TV sometimes.

The more advanced form of this obfuscation is the outright denial of knowledge.  After all, if people never learn about Gramsci in the first place, then you don't have to spend any time twisting his words to your ends.  Banning books and similar such efforts to this effect have been a staple of right-wing tactics since time immemorial, but it is nonetheless stunning to see it happen in real time.

The good news in all of this is that we no longer have to worry about Hochman's use of the former tactic because he's moving up to the big leagues.  Hooray for him.
