#28 - New Plastic Ideas

#28
Artist: Unwound
Album: New Plastic Ideas
Year of Release: 1994
Label: Kill Rock Stars

Unwound's entire discography is replete with infectious moments, math-rock inspired rhythms, and a lot of focused energy.  But that's not always accompanied by similar measures of precision in songwriting, which means a lot of their output feels slightly unfinished.  Their second album is (for me, at least) the best on the latter front, and as such is my favorite.  After the opening barrage of the first three tracks, "Hexenzsene" and "Abstraktions" are back-to-back gems.  The former introduces a clever theme and then loops back around to it at the end while the latter starts out similarly but then does a masterful long fade-out.  By the time you get to the pure bile in the closing track "Fiction Friction," the band has used every trick in its repertoire to craft its masterpiece.
