#29 - Deloused in the Comatorium

#29
Artist: The Mars Volta
Album: Deloused in the Comatorium
Year of Release: 2003
Label: Universal

I talked about how I often prefer artists' earlier work in previous entries, but this is not that.  Sure, Deloused is technically the first LP from The Mars Volta but given the overlap with At the Drive-In, I would view this as mid-career work from the duo of Cedric Bixler-Zavala and Omar Rodriguez-Lopez.  Furthermore, the progression along the two bands' work is as obvious and linear as with anyone.  The punk/emo trappings of ATDI gave way to the overindulgence of The Mars Volta, but this album hits the sweet spot right in between.  Some tracks may run long, but almost all of them feature propulsive segments tied together with enough connective tissue to form cohesive wholes.  This is musical candy that's also somehow good for you.
