#26 - Songs for the Deaf

#26
Artist: Queens of the Stone Age
Album: Songs for the Deaf
Year of Release: 2002
Label: Interscope

It's actually amazing that this is one of my favorite records in spite of its incredibly hokey conceit of pretending to be someone flipping through radio stations.  If you ever want proof that I am fundamentally an earnest person unswayed by considerations of appearing uncool, this is as good of evidence as I can muster.

A couple posts ago I talked about why I like some middle-career records best.  Here is another one.  The Josh Homme-verse is even larger and more varied, so in theory it's harder for anything to stick out.  At the same time, "No One Knows" is almost certainly his biggest hit so it's not a secret that the band struck gold with Songs for the Deaf.  Just like Deloused, the key to this album's success is a marriage of sound and songwriting, peaking together at the right time.
