#37 - Souvlaki

#37
Artist: Slowdive
Album: Souvlaki
Year of Release: 1993
Label: Cherry Red

When I first discovered Slowdive I thought they were fine but mostly derivative of a certain other band that will appear much much higher on this list, so I wrote them off.  But not everything has to be the best version of itself to be great.  Indeed, over time Slowdive's slightly dreamier version of that other band's shoegaze-y ways wore me down.  The opening gamut of "Alison," "Machine Gun," and "40 Days" is near-perfect, but nothing sticks in my head more stubbornly than their cover of "Some Velvet Morning."  That bass line, man.
