Because of my self-imposed "one album per artist" rule for this list, I have to make some hard decisions. The prolific nature of the noise barons Sunn O))) makes for one such impossible choice. Their dynamic 2009 opus Monoliths & Dimensions would be the obvious selection for most. However, my personal tendency towards an artists' early work leads me to pick their unrelenting debut. Each of the four tracks is a pure unrelenting wall of sound consisting of variations on the same theme that become hauntingly familiar while never crossing over into banality. Nothing else in their two decades of work highlights their core competencies quite as well. ØØ Void sets an extremely high baseline of what drone metal is and what it should be.
